My bags are packed and ready… well, almost. I’ve got a handy tax return due any week now and almost a month untilĀ I go overseas to Bali. I can get a tax rebate on the camera / lens purchase if I purchase within 1 month of my flight. Here’s what I’m looking at:
Canon (because I’m a sheep and everyone at work uses a Canon)
I can see the price ranges and the feature ranges on many websites. This site seems to be a good indicator: Digital Camera Warehouse.
My biggest point of confusion is the Canon EOS range 1000D, 450D, 500D, 50D, 5D with a price difference that doesn’t appear to match features or specs.
There are other D-SLRs to start with but I’ve always shopped for quality before understanding what a product does for me.
If we look at the price range in AUD (without lenses):
- 1000D @ $728.95 (some might say it’s a heavier, bulkier, more expensive compact camera)
- 450D @ $865.00 (cheap for its strengths)
- 500D @ $1,139.00 (my favourite)
- 50D @ $1,568.00 (much better than my favourite)
- 5D Mark II @ $3,888.00 (I’ll need to sell the car, break up with my girlfriend, sell my Bali flight tickets and cancel hotel reservations to afford this one)
- 1Ds Mark III @ $RRP $11,999.00
To look at reviews from experts that aren’t sponsored by Canon, I turned to Digital Photography Review. I found the author there was biased in a sense that they thought the Canon 40D was the holy grail of affordable cameras and the Canon D30 was the only impressive camera less than $10k ever made by Canon.
I then had a look at the Canon website www.canon.com.au. The best tutorial was at Canon’s Enjoy D-SLR tutorial.
My conclusion: Basically, the image quality is incredible for all the cameras, compared to what I’m currently using. I will get the 500D, knowing full well that if I spend top dollar, a newer release will come out a month later, if I get the 50D, I’ll see the manufacturing deficiencies that the DPR author spoke about (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paranoia), if I get the 1000D or 450D, I won’t be impressed enough with the improvements compared to my current cheap compact camera.
I hate buying ditital equipment in a digital age. Hopefully the next 10 years worth of lenses will still be compatible. Lenses? Another day.
