Apocrine glands (sweat glands) feed bacteria which create a smell on mammals, more commonly known as body odour.
Surely you’ve been in that situation on the bus where someone who mustn’t have showered has their arms up to hold onto the railing, or someone’s wearing clothes with enough dried sweat to smell like a school gym storage room and then there’s the infection that rots from a skin graze or tooth decay, and those who don’t believe in toothpaste.
On the bus, or while outdoors, or while in an elevator, we can tell ourselves it’s not permanent and the torture will finish soon… but what if it’s your girlfriend or boyfriend who has this hygene problem? Is this reason enough to end the relationship? Do you try to stoop to their level? Do you wait for them to start looking after themselves? Is it such that they do shower twice daily and can’t help but smell foul? How do you weigh the pros and cons of dating a smelly person?
Maybe a trial run will sort you out. Perfume or deodorant as a gift sends them a message. It’s not subtle however. This can work. People’s senses tend to dull quickly when they touch something very hot or very cold, see in the extreme bright or extreme dark, or hear the loud music at the dance club. Maybe humans can’t smell themselves anymore if they’ve been near themselves for more than 5 minutes. Maybe it’s purely routine from upbringing that some of us brush our teeth at least twice daily and try to shower before leaving the house.
The empathetic look suggests we consider costs of hygene products, costs of accomodation that includes hot water and whether it’s possible that the pungent person hasn’t been home since Friday morning because social appearances outweigh hygene needs, even on a Sunday morning.
Excuse me if I take the next elevator.
